Ofsted commentary: schools no longer free to educate

Rod MacKinnon is the headmaster of independent Bristol Grammar School and former head of Bexley Grammar School, tells it as it is ......

Lots of good things have happened over the past decade. As a state school head of 13 years, I know that school buildings are much better than they have ever been; we have invested heavily in teacher training, producing a far greater standard of trainees; and there has been a recognition that support for head teachers matters in the drive for improvements.

But the bottom line is that our schools have lost their focus — there is a muddle about what schools can and should do.

Education is not a “children’s service” — it is about raising aspirations and life chances.
